From Planes to Trains

Posted by Jabawacefti

After the horrific terrorist attacks in India, where over 150 people were ruthlessly murdered, we now have to worry, how do we stay safe from a train attack?

I guess when school children are a reasonable target, as in Beslan, anything goes.

Just FYI because most people are surprised to learn, schoolchildren were targeted on September 11th, too. My daughter went to pre-school in WTC, though she'd 'graduated' to first by that day.

Slaughter is horrific, but somehow, indiscriminate slaughter is moreso.

Well, indiscriminate slaughter is moreso because it indicates a certain lack of humanity in those who carry it out. Or, conversely, a sense of twisted "purpose" that rational people can't wrap their rational minds around.

It's my humble opinion that we're never "safe." We weren't safe when Russia had the bomb, and we weren't safe when pirates ruled the seas. Terror is constant. What changes is how we choose to react to it.

I would respectfully argue that we are substantially worse off than we were with Russia or pirates (see Flying Spaghetti Monster).

There is something inherently different between terror as byproduct of other forces (good or bad). But when terror is both a means and an end for death loving nihilists, we're talking about a difference in the kind of terror, not merely a difference in degree and/or how we choose to react to it.

Pirates want money. The Russians wanted power. Suicidal nihilists want death. Cause that's where the virgins are.
